32 BIRD MEETING: ABBERTON RESERVOIR 26th January, 1986 Britain's "top-rated" reservoir for wildfowl was visited by 14 members on a frosty, wind- less day of blue skies. Among the 50 species seen were excellent views of a female Smew from the hide at quite close quarters. A further 3 females of this species were also seen from the small causeway where good views of their cousins, the Goosander, were also obtained. Both of these fish-eating ducks are known as "sawbills" because of their serrated beaks.
