5 THE FOUR SEASONS PROJECT The four seasons project is aimed at those naturalists who are not just content with records, but who wish to learn more about the lives and relationships of the animals and plants they discover. The woodland community consists of a vast number of inter-related species. Whilst in this study we do not intend to carry out a detailed survey, it is hoped that some knowledge and understanding of this rich habitat will be gradually built up from the heterogenous mass of observations collected through the year. A background picture of the wood as a unit will be provided, together with a map of the area, and some details of general topography, geology, soil and principal types of flora and fauna. Onto this backcloth we can build up a more detailed and integrated picture of the woodland community as a whole. The meetings will be structured essentially according to the wishes of those taking part. However, we hope to briefly note some of the dominant features of each season , and then to examine in more detail subjects of specific interest to members present. Possible examples could include:- variations in bird numbers, species and position in the wood, showing perhaps feeding preferences and habitats small mammal trapping, with tracks and signs
