Clearly this species is now resident, and increasing, in E Essex. Nola confusalis (H.-S.; Least Black Arches 90 Bradwell, resident, increasing (AJD,SFJD); 11 St Osyth, 1983-86, increasing (RWA); 23 Dovercourt, 1986 (MEA); Copperas Wood NR, 1986 (PS). Clearly increasing on the coastal fringe; hitherto the species' Essex stronghold has been Epping Forest (see LMBE). Nola aerugula (Hb.) Scarce Black Arches 90 Bradwell, 1985 (AJD). NOCTUIDAE Euxoa cursoria (Hufn.) Coast Dart 23 Dovercourt, 22 September 1985 (MEA). This is only the third Essex record since the turn of the century: the others were also at Dovercourt (in 1979). Actinotia polyodon (Cl.) Purple Cloud 90 Bradwell, 17 June 1986 (AJD), the third Essex record (all from Bradwell). Paradiarsia glareosa (Esp.) Autumnal Rustic 80 Chigborough Lakes NR, 3, 1985 (AJD, SFJD); St Osyth, 1986 (RWA). Xestia rhomboidea (Esp.) Square-spotted Clay 53 Saffron Walden, 2, 1986 (AME). Four individuals have now occurred in this locality since 1983. Apart from one at nearby Chesterford Park in 1977 (see LMBE), it had not previously been recorded in Essex since 1965.
