spread along the coastal fringe.
Trachea atriplicis (Linn.) Orache Moth
90 Bradwell, 7 July 1986 (SFJD); 00 Tillingham marshes,
8 July 1986 (BS). These are the first British records
of this moth since 1915. Up to that time it had been
a scarce resident in the eastern counties, the last
Essex record having been in 1911.
Apamea lateritia (Hufn.) Scarce Brindle
23 Dovercourt, 24 July 1985 (Bretherton and Chalmers-
Hunt, 1986). The fourth British and first Essex
record of this continental species; recorded by MEA
and PS, the identification was confirmed by BS from a
colour transparency. The possibility of passage on
a ship docking at Harwich cannot be excluded.

record, the other having also been at Bradwell.
Hydraecia petasitis (Doubl.) The Butterbur
53 Saffron Walden, 28 September 1986 (AME), the fifth
Essex record and the first since 1975, which was also
in the NW (see LMBE).
Coenobia rufa (Haw.) Small Rufous
80 Chigborough Lakes NR, several, 1986 (AJD, SFJD);
Ol Fingringhoe Wick NR, 1986 (MEA, PS); 11 St Osyth,
1985 (RWA); 23 Copperas Wood NR, 1985-86; Dovercourt,
1986 (MEA). This species is now being encountered
