4 RAPTOR RESCUE Raptor Rescue (a registered charity) is an organisation which has, since its inauguration in 1978, assisted sick and injured birds of prey, and when fully recuperated, correctly returned them to the wild. The members of Raptor Rescue work alongside the RSPCA and the Police in many parts of the country. Despite their success to date, they can handle only a small percentage of the vast number of birds requiring assistance. Conservation of our wild raptor population is vital. With an estimated 60—80% mortality rate within their first year, combined with a declining habitat, the use of various lethal chemicals and persecution from a variety of sources, their concern does not seem misplaced. On Saturday, 4th March at 2.30 p.m. Mr. Abbey, Chairman of Raptor Rescue, will talk about the organisation's work, and, if possible, will bring suitable live animals with him. If The Essex Field Club is really concerned in the conservation of our native fauna, this talk must be of special interest. FIONA HUGHES
