Temperatures at different heights in the woods, plus min./max., day/night temperatures would also have been of interest. However, on each of the four visits the even sunshine enabled direct site comparisons to be made and illus- trated the effects on the habitat. For example, when the sunlight was interrupted by the dense canopy of Area 1, the ambient temperature was consistently lower than Area 2, and that with its moderate canopy cover, lower than the open area in Area 4. Notably the wind chill was limited on these visits, but at night the woodlands would be expected to hold heat longer than the open community in the autumn and winter. When the tree canopies were greatly reduced the differences were similarly reduced. Water temperatures at site 3 were taken at a depth of approximately 9 inches and some 2 feet from the edge.
