Extracts From the Diary of an Essex Naturalist

In 1986 I was fortunate enough to be put in
contact with Mr. McKenzie Smith a local
naturalist, who was active in the 1930's in the
Epping Forest area. During the years 1932 to
1938 Mr. McKenzie Smith, now in his seventies
and living in Whitehall Road, Woodford Green,
kept notes of his observations mainly on
bird—life in Epping Forest and widely in the
Roding Valley., but particularly in the vicinity
of Luxborough Lane and Chigwell Sewage Farm.
The following entries have been extracted from
the diaries and most have been chosen because
they reflect some of the great changes that
have taken place, particularly in bird
populations, in the last fifty years. A
number of records are referable to Chigwell
Sewage Farm (the sewage farm just off
Luxborough Lane, Chigwell) and, unless
otherwise stated, all sewage farm records are
referable to this site. Very occasionally I
