27 target of the firethorn leaf-miner moth is the garden shrub Pyracantha. Scientists believe that by tracking the spread of the insect, the spread of other species as biological control agents and genetically modified species might be predicted. The Department of the Environ- ment is spending £390,000 over three years on the project. Sightings of the moth which cause distinctive blistering on Pyracantha leaves should be notified to Professor John Lawton, Imperial College's Centre for Population Biology, Ascot, Berkshire, SL5 7PY, from whom a free pamphlet may be obtained.
