ERIOCRANIIDAE Small purple and gold, day-flying moths, some of which are among the first to appear in spring. The larvae make conspicuous blotches in the leaves of their foodplant, their excrement forming long, spaghetti-like threads. All the eight British species are resident in Essex, but some of the birch-feeding species are under-recorded because of difficulty in determining the early stages. Eriocrania subpurpurella (Haw.)
