likely to occur. The larvae of some species mine leaves or stems; others feed
externally, in some instances gregariously, in a silken web spun amongst
foliage. Pupation takes place either in a stout, boat-shaped coccoon or one of
flimsy, network construction. Of the 76 British representatives, 56 have been
recorded in Essex and one or two others should occur. Recording is uneven:
several species are much more widely distributed than the maps suggest.
