C. clypeiferella Hofm. Res., 1977. Chenopodium album. V. loc. and r. VC 18.71 Hatfield Peverel, larvae 2 Oct. 1977 (AME) ELACHISTIDAE Small moths which fly mainly at dawn and dusk and are therefore seldom observed. Most have grey or fuscous forewings with a pale fascia and/or spots, but some are white with or without a darker pattern. Their obscure markings render some species difficult to determine. Except for the first two species, the larvae mine Gramineae, Cyperaceae or Juncaceae; some of them are to be found feeding as early as February or March. Only 29 of the 44 British species have been noted in Essex and in general the family is poorly recorded, the greatest number being found on the north-western chalk.
