Aphelia viburnana ([D. & S.]) Res., 1845-1980. Erica, and many herbaceous plants. Loc. f.c. Two
races occur, one inland or on dry ground near the sea, the other on saltings. The inland race,
which is found principally amongst heather, has the forewing dark brown and is smaller. The
salt-marsh race is larger and the forewing is pale yellowish grey. Thurnall (1902) suspected that
there were two species and HCH, thinking likewise, sent examples to F.N Pierce for his
opinion; but Pierce pronounced them conspecific after dissecting the genitalia. In south-east
Essex the races are found in close proximity but apparently do not interbreed (HCH, pers.
comm.).

mainly near the coast, perhaps extending its range.

Clepsis rurinana (Linn.) NRR., (1903). Polyphagous. "Local and scarce" (VCH); Harwood may
have withheld the exact localities for reasons of conservation or commercial advantage. "Essex"
(Meyrick, 1928; Bradley et al., 1973) probably derives from the VCH record.
C. spectrana (Treits.) Res., 1840-1980. Polyphagous on herbaceous plants. Wdspd and v.c. A form
with the markings obsolescent (f. latiorana Staint.) was named from specimens taken at
Southend by S. Stevens and occurs on the salt-marshes in both vice-counties. Two adults reared
30 May and 6 July 1977 from 53 Newport were of the melanic f. liverana Mansbridge (AME). 40
