Fieldfare Turdus pilaris I have noted this winter visitor only infrequently and in small numbers, perhaps due to the lack of berries on bushes such as holly and hawthorn, though I have seen flocks of up to 30 birds flyover. Song Thrush Turdus philomelos Not common, but present all year round and certainly breeds in small numbers. Redwing Turdus iliacus Marginally more frequent than the fieldfare in the winter of 1978-79, with a maximum of four seen on 29th January. Larger flocks fly over (including I believe at night). Blackbird Turdus merula By far the most frequent of the thrushes present all year round, certainly breeds and I have noted loose flocks of in excess of 20 birds feeding on the burnt and disturbed area. Robin Erithacus rubecula Frequent, present all year round. Blackcap Sylvia atricapilla At least two pairs held territories on the edge of the burnt and disturbed area in 1980. Garden Warbler Sylvia borin Two birds, including a singing male, were noted going in and out of a dense patch of bramble and sallow saplings on the burnt and disturbed area on the 24th May 1980, though subsequently nothing more was seen or heard of the birds. Chiffchaff Phylloscopus collybita A maximum of six males heard singing about the burnt and disturbed area in 1980. Willow Warbler Phylloscopus trochilus A maximum of five males heard singing about the burnt and disturbed area in 1980. Goldcrest Regulus regulus Infrequent, mainly a winter visitor though I have records of this little warbler as late as 9th April. Spotted Flycatcher Muscicapa striata A few birds seen about the burnt and disturbed area in the spring and autumn; possibly one or two pairs breed. Dunnock Prunella modularis Frequent, present all year round. Starling Sturnus vulgaris Present all year round and a very common breeding species. Tree Pipit Anthus trivialis A single bird noted on the burnt and disturbed area on the 8th June 1980. Possibly a late passage bird, attracted by the cleared woodland, this species is more usually to be seen in the Long Running and Sunshine Plain areas of Epping Forest. Pied Wagtail Motacilla alba Noted on a few occasions in and about Lords Bushes mainly in the winter months. 61
