Young Number of species admitted The number of species of macrolepidoptera now admitted by the Panel to the Essex list is 717 (58 butterflies, 659 moths), which represents about 71% of the species on the British list The Guide list total is 691 (58 butterflies, 633 moths) but two species, Idaea dilutaria and Hypena crassalis (see pp 116-117) have since been removed. The present list, therefore, includes 28 moth species which were absent from the Guide's list of admitted species. Of these 28, one has recently been separated from a closely similar species; eight species have occurred for the first time since the Guide was published; six have since been discovered in collections; 10 (two of which, however, were recorded again while the present work was in preparation) have been added as a result of further research in the literature; two, rejected by the Guide, have now been admitted; and one, mentioned in the VCH, had been inadvertently omitted from the Guide. 35
