With their quite stout bodies and wing-shape they resemble the noctuids. They have functional mouthparts and are strictly nocturnal. The larvae are stout, smooth and have a full complement of legs. They are monophagous or oligophagous on trees and shrubs and overwinter as pupae in slight cocoons spun amongst dead leaves at ground level.
