2232 Aporophyla nigra Haw. Black Rustic. Further reports now bring
the Essex tally to twenty-seven records, seventeen of these since 1987.
The species has appeared as far north as 23 Harwich.
2254 Antitype chi L Grey Chi. 22 Walton 1931 (JNB). New to Essex.
2255 Eumichtis lichenea Hb. Feathered Ranunculus. At 11 Jaywick
this species has been reported as now being one of the commonest
autumn moths, with nightly catches of c. 1 50 at a mv light trap (JY).
Elsewhere numbers are increasing with notable range extensions in the
north-west.
2276 Xanthia ocellaris Borkh. Pale-lemon Sallow. 90 Bradwell singles
in 1986, 1987, 1988 and 1990 (AJD, SFJD).
2291 Craniophora ligustri D&S The Coronet. 70 Chelmsford 15 July
1986 (CP, RMS). First Essex record since 1969.
2290 Simyra albovenosa Goeze Reed Dagger. Another species which
appears to be increasing. I have received many records of larvae and
adults along the coastal margins and, increasingly, inland.
2328 Apamea lateritia Hufn. Scarce Brindle. 23 Dovercourt: there are
now six records for this species from 1985 to 1990, all occurring in
July (MEA, DMA). There has been speculation that it may be resident in
the area, although searches during 1992 yielded nothing.

2362 Hydraecia petasitis Doubl. The Butterbur. 60 Writtle 4 August
1990 (MG, RN conf. GAP). Sixth Essex record.
2365 Gortyna borelii Pierr. Fisher's Estuarine Moth. Recent survey (in
1989 and 1990) of larvae and adults on Skipper's Island have indicated
that the species is doing well.
Also of interest is an entry in JNB's field notebook of a failed attempt to
rear an unknown noctuid larva in the stem of Peucedanum officinale in
1934.
