Essex Mammals in 1996 John Wright 47 Chalkwell Park Drive, Leigh on Sea, Essex SSP 1NH The last Mammal Atlas for Essex mammals was published in 1986 as a collaboration between the Essex Field Club and the county Museums Service. Since January 1994, a new survey has been commenced with the objective of publishing a new atlas for the millennium. To date nearly 6,000 records have been collected and this report summarises some recent occurrences. In the autumn of 1996, a Harvest mouse survey was conducted as part of a national survey coordinated by The Mammal Society. The objective was to visit those sites where Harvest mice had been recorded during a previous survey in 1976. Presence of mice was proven by the finding of nests in suitable habitat
