Appendix Historical background * 1100's : Fallow deer re-introduced to Britain, following extinction after the Ice Age. * 1465 : Black fallow deer recorded in Windsor forest by Harting. 1489-1493 : "316 red and fallow deere found dede of murrayn in the forest". This is taken from a Verderer's record - "murrayn" is a non-specific term referring to death from cold, starvation, parasites, etc. It is also reported that in 1489 there was a "great destruction hy murrain in, Stratford, Ongre, Ilford and Waltham". 1495 : Fallow deer first recorded in Epping Forest. 1543 : Henry VIII builds a hunting lodge for the deer park which has heen created at Chingford Plain. 1589 : The hunting lodge is restored hy Elizabeth I. 1612 : Black fallow deer are introduced for James I, either by his father in law the king of Denmark, or hy the Danish ambassador. 1615 : Many deer dead from "murrain". James I forbids the taking of pawnage/pannage (the free range of pigs on acorns and roots). 1643 : Deer to be spared from killing for three years due to excessive slaughter. 1688: Deer to be spared.
