Recorded from fifteen localities during May - October: Benfleet, Bulphan, Canvey Island, Coggeshall, Colchester, Dengie, Dovercourt, East Tilbury, Foulness, Grays, Linford, Southminster, Stanford-le-Hope, Tollesbury and West Bergholt. These usually involved single adults. 88 DBR 1620 Marbled White Melanargia galathea L. Astonishing numbers at Canvey Island. 660 were seen on the sea defences on 14 July alone and Graham Bailey has been monitoting numbers there and elsewhere. Another notable site was at Hadleigh Castle C.P., where 120 were counted on 13 July. Grahame reports nine other sites where the butterfly was seen, mostly in ones or twos. 34 DBR
