In 1997, eight species of bat were recorded in Essex. This total includes both
species of Pipistrelle (as yet unnamed) that are separable by physical features and
ultrasound. The following is a review of the more interesting records and
includes additions to the known 10km distribution maps. A highest ever total of
85 bats was present in the Grays deneholes on 16th February.
Natterer's bat Myotis nattereri (Kuhl 1819)
A record total of 16 bats were counted at a hibernation site at Coggeshall and a
second best ever total of 26 from the Grays deneholes in February. New records
were from TL42 and TL71 with droppings of this species being identified at
Hole Farm, Stansted and Fairstead Hall.
