Change of recording arrangements for Diptera Neil Harvey and Del Smith For some years there have been two recorders in Essex covering Diptera: Roger Payne dealing with Hoverflies (Syrphidae) and Del Smith covering all of the other families. Following his preparation of a paper covering their status and distribution within the county (to be published in the next edition of Essex Naturalist), Neil Harvey has now been appointed as recorder for the Larger Brachycera. This group covers all of those families included in Alan Stubbs' and Martin Drake's excellent guide to the British Soldierflies and their Allies namely: Acroceridae, Asilidae, Athericidae, Bombyliidae, Rhagionidae, Scenopiniidae, Stratiomyidae, Tabanidae, Therevidae, Xylomyidae and Xylophagidae. All records for these families should be sent directly to Neil at the address below. They will all be forwarded to Del periodically so that a comprehensive Essex Diptera database can be maintained. Del remains recorder for all of the other Dipteran families. The contact details for the three recorders are: Diptera (except hoverflies and Larger Brachycera): DA.
