Presentation by David Hedges from the RSPB "A Synopsis of the South Essex Marshes". The RSPB acquired its first land in South Essex in 2006 and since then the reserve has grown to nearly 1000 hectares. With a broad range of habitats including over 500 hectares of coastal wet grassland as well as reedbeds, intertidal habitats and dry grassland and scrub the reserve supports a diverse range of wildlife. Sections of the reserve are coming to the end of restoration, others are just beginning and more is planned for as late as 2020, so there is a lot to say. This talk will review how the first three years work has contributed to delivering the reserves vision and outline how the reserve is planned to develop. Some of the key species discovered in the first three years and how they will be conserved and enhanced will also be discussed.
