Belhus, Aveley / Magnificent Thorndon / Hylands, Widford Belhus, Aveley A sixteenth century house, remodelled in the eighteenth century The park was established in 1618. Lancelot Brown worked on the park in 1753. Note how the park goes right up to the house. The house was demolished in 1957 and the M25 now goes through what was the eastern edge of the park. Some of the land, referred to now as Belhus Chase, has been heavily planted by the Woodland Trust (since 1998). It was returning from a ball at Belhus in 1811 that Humphry Repton sustained his debilitating injury in a carriage accident. (Engraving c. 1832, Map 1777).
