before emparking. Lawford Hall has a Bronze Age barrow; Audley End has its Ring Hill Camp;
South Weald also has what is probably an Iron Age Hill Fort and Crondon, although farmed (and
golfed), has a massive earthwork (at TL 689001). which may also be part of an ancient fortification.
Lexden Park near Colchester also has ancient earthworks - a huge ditch and bank said to be an Iron
Age defensive position is now a scheduled ancient monument.
