Essex Parks - location and access
The list below includes existing parks and the sites of some that have been disparked. Included are
just 66 of the over 160 parks that have existed in Essex. Only some 25% of those listed have fonnal
public access (bold), the rest are private and their owners privacy should be respected; for these,
access is by permission only. However, many Essex parks are traversed by footpaths (see relevant
OS. Map) and it is still possible to get the 'feel' of many parks by this route. Public parks currently
with free access include Bedfords, Belhus, Dagnam, Danbury, Gaynes (Upminster) now Parklands,
Havering, Hylands, Mistley, Thorndon, Wanstead and Weald. Access to the grounds of Audley End
and Marks Hall are by payment of a fee. Some parks may levy a car-parking fee. Some historic
buildings either in, or formerly in or adjacent to a parkland setting, such as Audley End, Blake Hall,
Castle Hedingham. Hylands and Ingatestone Hall, arc open (or partly open) to the public. Chalkney
Wood and Norsey Wood (formerly a swine park and deer park respectively) are both public access,
but have not been included on the list.
