The Cultivated Landscape - Hylands and its planted trees, shrubs and herbaceous plants The third avenue, of Horse Chestnut, is the most recent of the avenues and was planted within the ownership period of Chelmsford Borough Council. This avenue follows the access road from the main gate to the house. Assuming that it is retained (Repton did not like straight avenues of trees in his landscapes), it too will add significantly to the treescapc of the park, will be an additional nectar source and ultimately, will provide good habitat for saproxylic invertebrates, particularly if pollarded. The list of cultivated herbaceous plants arc all species planted in the formal gardens, the vast majority in the period 2000 - 2003. The rose terrace (east of the house) was destroyed during building work in 2002. but re-made shortly afterwards and planted-up. Some remedial work around the collapsed wooden pergola during this period also resulted in some new plantings also included on the list. Cher twenty varieties of Narcissus are to be found around the gardens and Home Farm (including the true Lent Lily, Narcissus pseudo-narcissus). The eight beds in the formal gardens host formal plantings (municipal type) in the winter and summer. 1.
