1613 Heath Fritillary Mellicta athalia Rott. Another good year (its 15th) at Thrift Wood,
Bicknacre. A new site in the wood was coppiced during the 1997-98 winter which then yielded
much cow wheat, and was subsequently occupied by the butterfly (per G.A. Pyman). 3 DBR
1620 Marbled White Melanargia galathea L. Layer Breton Heath, 20 July (A. Thompson per
A. Goodey). A very northerly sighting. This species continues to do well at its south Essex
