Orthoptera of Essex in 1997 and 1998 ALAN WAKE 39 AU Saints Terrace, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire GL52 6UA Since the publication of Grasshoppers and Crickets of Essex, records have continued to come in on a more regular basis. Despite not being able to gel to Essex frequently to monitor interesting sites, these are still being discovered. The Lea Valley really needs a systematic recording discipline which would, I'm sure, produce rich results. Sites continue to be found elsewhere, and regular monitoring of these would in all probability produce further records. Some of the more interesting areas are as follows: Site of the new Basildon Rugby Club TQ 689 899 Consisting of old meadows which almost certainly have never been improved, much of this site is to be lost to sports pitches. An area lias been set aside as County Wildlife Site which contains habitats representative of the whole site. I am grateful to Neil Harvey for this information; he will endeavour to inomtor the site to see the outcome of these developments. The following Orthoptera were recorded in 1997: Meconema thalassinum The stridulation of a further bush-cricket Pholidoptera griseoaptera species was also heard; I would think this was Metrioptera roeselii almost certainly a conehead, either Leptophyes punctatissima Conocephalus dorsalis or C, discolor. Perhaps Tetrix subulata they are both there? In a site as rich as this, it Omocestus viridulus seems improbable that both Chorthippus Chorthippus brunneus parallelus and Tetrix undulata are not there, Chorthippus albomarginatus which could produce a species total of eleven! Within the Lea Valley Country Park, there are two interesting areas which have been brought to my notice by David Miller. Both sites have the potential for further species.
