Review of the Lepidoptera of Essex for 1999 89 0174 Heterogenea asella (Denis & Schiffermuller) Triangle Beaumont-cum-Moze TM1625, 17 July (J.B. Fisher). Fourth recent Essex site. Also appeared during July at its better-known localities of Copperas Wood, five adults, and Stour Wood, 22 adults (P. Smith et al), making this a good year for the species. 4DBR Tineidae 0220 Nemapogon clematella (Fabricius) Colchester, High Woods Country Park TM0026, 23 June (B. Goodey). Netted at dusk. More frequent in north-west Essex: Emmet, 1981 lists four lo- calities and it occurred at Saffron Walden in 1985 and 1996. Else where this distinctive species is very scarce. 2DBR 0237 Niditinea fuscella (L.) Thundersley, Woodend Close 17 July (D. Down). Third record from this garden. Saffron Walden (once) and East Ham (twice) arc other localities, both in 1990. 3DBR Gracillariidae 0363 Phyllonorycter platanoidella (Joannis) Jaywick, mines on Norway Maple at TM1312, 14 July (J. Young). The other recent record is High Woods CP, in 1991. 2DBR 0368 Phyllocnistis unipunctella (Stephens) Jaywick, mines discovered on White Poplar Populus alba at TM1312 on 3 August, a new foodplant for this species (J. Young and A.M. Emmet). 4DBR 0369 Phyllocnistis xenia (Hering) Colchester, Ipswich Road TM0126 on 17 July at mercury vapour (B. Goodey). Known from Kent and possibly a few other localities in southern England. New to Essex Sesiidae 0370 Sesia apiformis (Clerck) Hornet Moth Chelmsford, a winter survey by G Wilkinson revealed many new larval sites and, later, adults on Populus fringing the Chelmer. Other new sites are Harlow (M.J. Pledger per CW. Plant) and Chadwell Heath (S.L. South). 34DBR Choreutidae 0389 Choreutis pariana (Clerck) Dovercourt, Oakley Road TM2230, three on 1 and 23 July, and 9 October (C. Gibson). Two other post-1990 sites arc Saffron Walden and Kirby-le-Soken. 3DBR Yponomeutidae 0409a Argyresthia trifasciata (Staudinger) Colchester, Ipswich Road 26 May (B. Goodey). Adults boxed during the day, showing reluctance to fly, and later at mercury vapour. Found on Chamaecyparis lawsoniana and x Cupressocyparis leylandii together with next species. Likely to be widespread if searched for, but known British sites at present probably number less than fifteen. Fust recorded in Britain at London in 1982 (Emmet, 1982). New to Essex 0409b A, cupressella (Walsingham) Colchester, Ipswich Road, a number of adults 26 May and cocoons on x Cupressocyparis leylandii 10 June (B. Goodey); Dovercourt, Oakley Road 10 June (C. Gibson). Significant range extensions from the area of Suffolk and north Essex where it was first discovered in Britain in 1997 (Agassiz & Tuck 1999), and it is likely to become something of a garden pest though larval feedings are not unsightly. 3DBR 0428 Yponomeuta rorrella (Hubncr) Tollesbury, Old Hall Marsh RSPB reserve TL9612, larvae collected on Crataegus during the summer and reared to adult stage (D. Warner). A hitherto unknown foodplant in Britain; the usual pabulum is Salix spp. 3DBR Essex Naturalist (New Series) 17 (2000)
