Myriapoda: a review of their status in Essex Necrophloeophagus flavus (De Geer) A widespread and generally common species which occurs in a wide range of habitats including arabic, gardens, waste ground, grassland as well as maritime and marsh sites (Barber & Keay 1988). In Essex it is clearly under-recorded and is likely to be found in much of the county. Brachygeophilus truncorum (Bergsoe & Meinert) Nationally a common centipede most often found in woodland, where it is commonly seen in large numbers between the bark and wood of decaying timber (Barber & Keay 1988). All the mapped records have been made by S.J. Gregory in North Essex in 1991, 1992 and 1994. There are also 1964-1988 10km records shown in the 1988 provisional national atlas for TM23, TL40, TQ49 and pre-1940 records for TQ59 and TQ69, together with several East Thames Corridor squares which probably originate in Kent. Order Scolopendromorpha Family Cryptopsidae Cryptops anomalans Newport National Status Notable/Nb A large impressive centipede capable of penetrating human skin with its poison claws, it occurs in scattered, more-or-less urban localities in south-east England with a few records from the south- west (Barber & Keay 1988). The only Essex records are of two specimens taken under cardboard amongst general rubbish under trees at Saffron Walden by A.D. Barber on 3 August 1968 (Barber 1969), and from Woodford Rubbish Tip, made by Dr S. Hopkin on 29 June 1985, 22 September 1985 and 5 May 1986. Essex Naturalist (New Series) 17 (2000)
