The Hornet Robber Fly is a flagship species for the UK Biodiversity Action Plan and it seems unlikely that such a conspicuous species should have been overlooked. It would need continuity of grazing for survival (Smith 2000), while grazing in the Forest has been discontinued for many years. There are plans to restart grazing parts of the Forest and it is hoped that this magnificent species will reappear. 110 Essex Naturalist (New Series) 17 (2000)
