Bats in Essex in 2001 Serotine Eptesicus serotinus (Schreber 1774) For the first time in several years, Serotines were recorded feeding at Danbury Lakes during May and July. The only roost count was often bats emerging at an established roost at Hornchurch. Leisler's Bat Nyctalus leisleri (Kuhl 1818) The first record was of three bats feeding over Danbury Lakes on 12th May followed by an emergence of 29 bats at Aveley on 5th June. This represented a slight increase on previous years suggesting that the decline that took place during the early 1990s maybe over. An identical count was also obtained at Coggeshall and 54 bats emerged from our largest known roost at Little Hallingbury. Of interest were three records away from previously known areas. In August, a flying juvenile was found and later released at Herongate, an injured individual was collected from Emerson Park and on 16th September, a female was found dead at Harlow. The final record of the year was of one feeding over Danbury Lakes on 5th October. Other species recorded during the summer season were Daubenton's Bat. Natterer's Bat, Noctule, Brown Long-eared Bat and both species of Pipistrelle.
