It is associated with oak, and distinguished by its more brick-red tones, particularly when dry, and, although cracking, it usually lacks the red tones so typical of X. chrysenteron. The base of the stem when cut reveals bright carrot-orange flesh, concentrated in tiny dots. The name is a problem, since this very old name of Bulliard is based on a plate which could be almost any of a number of species. A new name is probably therefore required. Xerocomus ferrugineus 2 GS Xerocomus lanatus? 78 RB: 8 GS. It is now known that the ammonia reaction on the cap, formerly used to separate this species, is unreliable, being present in all species in this group, under the right conditions. Only two species are now usually distinguished, X ferrugineus and X. subtomentosus, with records of X. lanatus needing to be re-appraised and placed in one of these two concepts.
