Essex erratic boulders: a gazetteer Twinstead A large sarsen (150x70x30) is situated just outside the churchyard (TL 861367). It was found under the old church when it was demolished in the late 19th century (Armfield 1893). A smaller sarsen (80x60x40) can be seen on the other side of the track. Twinstead Green At the road junction (TL 849364) is an almost completely buried sarsen (90x35 visible) with a fine mammilated surface. Wethersfield Next to the churchyard, outside a private residence known as Ivanhoe House (TL 712312), is a sarsen (90x60x45). White Notley By a cottage gate (TL 788177) is a splendid, colourful puddingstone (110x65x45). This boulder lias been referred to in articles and books more often than any other puddingstone in Essex (Kenworthy 1887; Smith 1887). Wickham St. Paul At either side of the entrance to Nether House Farm (TL 839365) are two sarsens. The largest (150x120x30) stands in an upright position. The smaller stone (120x60x40) has fine mammilated surfaces on both sides. It is one of the best examples in north Essex. By the road, at the entrance to Wickham Hall Farm near All Saints Church (TL 827372) are several sarsens (the largest 180x140x60). BRENTWOOD DISTRICT Ingatestone Two well known sarsens can be seen at the junction of the High Street and Fryerning Lane (TQ 65119967) (Salter 1914). They are positioned on the street corners, the largest at least one metre in height. These sarsens have been cited numerous times in books and magazine articles. On the other side of the road, adjacent to the south door of St.Edmund and St.Mary Church, lies another sarsen (90x60x40) (Salter 1914). Navestock At the hamlet called Horseman Side a giant boulder of ferricrete (210x150x60) sits on a concrete plinth by the road (TQ 546962). It was placed here in 2000 to mark the new millennium (Anon 2000b). The boulder was excavated from a neighbouring field. South Weald A small but colourful puddingstone (45x30x30) can be seen by the entrance path to St. Peter's Church (TL 571938). 122 Essex Naturalist (New Series) 20 (2003)
