The gasteroid fungi of Essex be found in Essex. These include the following:- Phallus hadriani Dune Stinkhorn Distribution 5 The cup is pinkish-mauve and the cap has a crenulated edge. It is confined to coastal dunes. Lycoperdon mammiforme Flaky Puffball Distribution 1:2:4 The fruiting body has a white veil-like covering over the minutely spiny outer layer. Nidularia deformis Pea-shaped Bird's -nest Distribution 1 : 5 The small fruiting bodies (0.3-1.0 cm across) are found in clusters on dead, fallen branches and wood-chips. They have a cream-coloured outer layer, which tears irregularly over the apex. Some mysterious records published in Pearson (1938) for wluch evidence in support of their pres- ence in Epping Forest has yet to be traced, include :- Astraeus hygrometricus Pisolithus arenarius (=arhizus) Tulostoma brumale Queletia mirabilis Battarrea phalloides (see Fig. I) Glishroderma cinctum {Tulostoma and Battarrea have recently been recorded elsewhere in Essex.)
