Leptoglossus occidentalis (Western Conifer Seed Bug)
This large (20mm) bug is a native of North America. It was introduced into mainland Europe circa 1999 and there are now very occasional reports of it crossing the channel to the UK.
It is a pest of conifer seeds rather than of leaf or wood but is considered to be a potential pest in the UK. The specimen illustrated in the photo gallery was found in the offices of the Essex Wildlife Trust at Great Wigborough on 26th October 2009.
