Summary: Ancient woodland administered by The Woodland Trust. Description: Oak, Ash, Beech, Sweet Chestnut. Several clearings. 2 ponds. 1 stream. Seasonal flowers including bluebells. Bambles, bracken. Fungi in autumn. Surrounded by farmland. Reason for interest: Ancient woodland, well administered. Home to various woodland flora and fauna. Various birds including nightingales and nuthatch. Comment: Local village is West Bergholt, 4 miles from Colchester. Site is frequented by Roe and Muntjac deer, badger, fox. Upper pond has Great Crested and Smooth Newts, and Grass Snakes. Insects include various dragonflies and damselflies, butterflies, moths, beetles. |
