Summary: The Walls is the highway running east/west along the river Stour between Mistley, New Rd at Mistley Towers and Manningtree, Quay St.

Description: To the north of the road the site is bordered by a close cut greensward and where mowers cannot reach, rough grass areas, then phragmites reedbed grading to salt marsh, mudflats and creeks. To the south there is the Mistley Place Park which includes a dense wooded area, ivy covered fencing, a pond and meadows. The pond is fed by local streams and passes under the road at a point known as Hopping Bridge. The outfall is by way of a sluice into a creek where at low tide many birds visit to drink fresh water. This site has easy accesss by road with frequent public transport passing along The Walls. It is well visited by naturalists, walkers, and in summer picnickers. Many visit to feed the herd of swans which are present all year round, attracting ducks, geese, gulls and waders. The saltings are use for the storage for wildfowlers punts while there are moorings in the estuary.

Reason for interest: The site is an important for over wintering birds, and offers many sites for hibernating invertebrates.

Comment: While strolling along the shoreline on 08/07/2013 found a a patch of Sea Milkwort on the sand/gravel patch the Towers end of the site.
