Species text
Amara strenua is found only in the extreme south-east of England, East Anglia and around the Bristol Channel. At the time of Luff's atlas (1998) it had been recorded from only three 10km squares in Britain post-1970, one in Suffolk, one in Sussex and one in Somerset, with older records for seven additional squares, one of them in South Essex. Since then it has been collected from several localities in South Essex and two in North Essex. Although reputed to be a species of coastal saltmarshes, this species is in fact associated with the floodplains of large rivers and is not halophilous (P. Hammond, pers. comm.). However, most British records are for coastal localities, grazing marshes or other (generally moist) grassland habitats. References
