Species text
This bright red and black rove beetle is a very local species that is distributed on the coasts of England and Wales from South Devon north to North-east Yorkshire, with recent records from East Sussex as far north as West Norfolk, and also in South Wales. There are few Essex records and ono more than 2 or 3 post-1970 (P. Hammond, pers. comm.). It occurs on coastal sand dunes, saltmarshes, on the foreshore and from undercliffs. It burrows into hard bare mud at the top of the shore in mudflats and saltmarshes. Adults and larvae live in burrows in moist sand or mud where they probably feed on detritus or algae. References
