Species text
Bruchus atomarius is a small black seed beetle with scattered whitish markings. It is widespread but local in southern and central England and also recorded from mid Wales. The beetle occurs in rough grassland on neutral or calcareous soils. It is phytophagous, associated with vetches Vicia, with records from common vetch V. sativa, tufted vetch V. cracca and bush vetch V. sepium. The larvae develop in pods of the foodplant (Hyman & Parsons, 1992). Management should be by grazing or cutting on a rotational basis, to maintain open conditions. References
