This is a small yellow green tortoise beetle with metallic gold stripes. It is widespread but very local in England, recorded in parts of Wales and western Scotland and more common on the coast. The beetle feeds on Caryophyllaceae, particularly Spergularia. In Britain, larvae are probably free-living on the foodplant during the summer and early autumn. Bowdrey (2002) notes a single example under a stone at Clacton-on-Sea as the first recent Essex record, although Alex Williams identified the beetle from material collected by P.R. Harvey at Colne Point in 1990, and it found again at that site in 2004. P.R. Harvey collected the species at Tollesbury Wick Marshes in 2004 at a saline depression between the seawall and borrowdyke. Some grazing, rotational cutting or other disturbance, such as rotovation, is needed to maintain open conditions (Hyman & Parsons 1992). References
