Species text
This small flattened black beetle is Widespread but local in England, and also recorded in South Wales and South West Scotland. It is most frequently encountered in southern and south-eastern England. The beetle has an indicator status Grade 3 in Harding & Rose (1986). It is found in ancient broad-leaved woodland and pasture-woodland, under bark and in fungus-infected wood. It has been recorded from beech and oak, and occasionally also from ash. Threats include the loss of broad-leaved woodland and parkland and habitat loss, in particular, through the felling of fungus-infected trees, removal of dead wood from living trees and the destruction or removal of standing and fallen dead wood for reasons such as forest hygiene, aesthetic tidiness, public safety or for use as fire wood. Fungus-infected trees and both fallen and standing dead timber, especially with the bark attached, should be retained. The removal of dead timber from fungus-infected trees should be avoided (Hyman & Parsons, 1992). References
