Species text
Cheilosia velutina remains poorly known with very few confirmed records, mainly on the eastern side of Britain. Apart from a site in Colchester all recent records in Essex are from the chalk pits and adjacent areas of the Grays-Thurrock area in the East Thames Corridor, many of which are threatened by development (Payne in Harvey 2002a). The larval host may mine the stems of Cirsium, and adults are often found at the flowers of white umbels such as Carrot Daucus carota. References
