Species text
Criomorphus williamsi is a very local pale brown and blackish grass-feeding planthopper, usually found in damp places. It is widely distributed but local in southern England, and not recorded from the north. Kirby (1992) states that most of the records form a rather tight cluster centred on Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire. When the Essex Red Data list was prepared there was a single record from Essex, from Bedfords Park in 1984. Most sites are in areas of slightly to moderately acid soils. Water tables in areas of damp grassland should be kept high. Open grassland should be managed so as to retain a good range of plant species and structural diversity. This is best achieved by moderate grazing. Grazing levels should be carefully monitored, to ensure that overgrazing does not occur (Kirby, op. cit.). References
