Species text
This is a yellowish brown ground beetle with conspicuous dark markings. It was formerly not uncommon in the East Anglian fens and Thames marshes. Around the turn of the century it declined dramatically. Since then this species has increased substantially, and is now recorded throughout much of south-east England (Luff 1998). It occurs in fens, broads, marshes, ponds, gravel pits, brackish marshes and tidal rivers, living among tall plants growing in or near water, particularly Phragmites beds and also in flood litter. It may be found hibernating in dead bulrush stems. Cutting, on a rotational basis, may be needed to maintain open conditions, and water tables should be maintained at high levels (Hyman & Parsons 1992). References
