Species text
Until the recent review, this rare ground beetle was a UKBAP species. Although a statement in the final draft review list states that it should be considered in site management, it was not included in the latest list because there was not considered to be any demonstrable threat. Its Species Statement is still listed on the UKBAP website. In the 20th century it had only been regularly recorded in the Solway region, but also with modern records from the Sussex coast and north-east Scotland (Luff, 1998) and it is a Brighton & Hove LBAP species. It is usually found in bare sand near water. Often near the coast. The beetle is a specific predator on small burrowing rove beetles of the genus Bledius, in particular B. opacus (P. Hammond, pers. comm.), a scarce rove beetle in Essex which was also found in the same area at the site as the Dyschirius angustatus. Management should aim at maintaining open conditions and encouraging the early successional stages. References
