Species text
This small black plaster beetle is widespread but local in southern and central England and recorded from North West England. Formerly, this species was considered to be very local although it appears to have spread (and is probably still spreading) over the last 30 years. It has an indicator status Grade 2 in Harding & Rose (1986). The beetle is associated with ancient broad-leaved woodlands and pasture-woodland, but has also been recorded in suburban gardens, parks and on isolated trees. It is found on and under bark, with records from ash, beech and birch. This beetle has recently been found to be associated with sycamore, especially trees attacked by sooty mould. References
