Species text
The bright metallic-green beetle Ischnomera cyanea was formerly confused under I. caerulea, which has so far only been recorded from Windsor Forest. I. cyanea is local, occurring mainly in older woodland, mainly in southern England and Wales. Larvae develop in rotten wood of elm, willow, beech, ivy and probably oak. Adults have been beaten from the foliage of oak, field maple, elm and hawthorn in ancient broad-leaved woodland, pasture-woodland, downland and hedgerows. The adults are often found on the flowers of hogweed and hawthorn. Threats include habitat loss, in particular, through the felling of ancient trees, removal of dead wood from living trees and the destruction or removal of standing and fallen dead wood for reasons such as forest hygiene, aesthetic tidiness, public safety or for use as fire wood. Hence areas that become used for amenity purposes are unlikely to support suitable habitat for this or other dead-wood species. Fowles et al. (1999) assign a rarity score of 4 out of a maximum of 32 for use in calculating Saproxylic Quality Indices. References
