Species text
Until this year the only previous British record of Musca osiris is of a single male from Seaford (Sussex) in 1875 by Verrall (D'Assis Fonseca, 1968, as Musca vitripennis). A single female was found during the current survey at East Tilbury Silt Lagoons, swept off tall flower rich grassland, and apparently another single specimen was found this year by Steven Falk in Sussex (Del Smith, pers. comm.). M. osiris is found in central and southern Europe, and may well be another species that will start turning up in Britain as a result of climate change. It is known to be one of a number of Musca species that transmit a cosmopolitan group of eyeworm spirurids responsible for ocular infections in domestic and wild animals. References
